About Me...

My name is Allison Benton. I am a junior at the University of South Alabama. I am majoring in elementary education. I have always known I was meant to be an elementary teacher because I love to teach children and watch them learn to their fullest potentials. I have always been a "role model" figure, being the oldest of three daughters. I grew up as a majorette, and then I taught a middle school majorette line when I was in high school and during some college. I have taught preschool as well, and no matter what the age of the student is, I love teaching. I have always enjoyed teaching, whether it was playing "teacher" to my two younger sisters or teaching majorettes. I have also enjoyed school all of my life. I have always done well in school, and I like the idea of school and obtaining an education. I enjoy spending as much time as I can learning; I believe that people never stop learning. I really like being in an elementary school atmosphere. I have done observation hours during previous semesters, and I love the excitement that children have when they learn something new and are able to apply their new knowledge to their life. I know teaching elementary school is what I am meant to do in my life, and I hope to be a great role model and educator.
My Teaching Philosophy

All children are creative

All children are Creative. I have always known this, but through taking an Art for Elementary course, I have come to know that this statement is a fact and not just an opinion. As children, people have no fear in being creative or expressing themselves in a creative way(s). It is when the children grow up to become adults that they lose their abilities to be creative like they once were. All children have he fullest potentials to be creative; each child is unique in his/her own way, and that uniqueness is creative. As a future teacher, I understand and acknowledge that each student will be as different as the next, but I know that I will have a lot of creativity in my classrooms to come.

Incorporating different subject areas into one lesson

Being a student and having to learn how much time I will actually have as a teacher to fully go over each subject area, I know that there will be some days to where I will not have enough time in a day to have a lesson plan for each subject area. Incorporating different subject areas into one lesson can not only provide me as a teacher with more time to teach, but it can also allow me to make lessons more relevant to my future students. I know most times, students do not learn as well when they do not realize why what they are learning is important to them individually. By incorporating more than one subjet area into one lesson, students can learn more than one subject at once, while at the same time realize that it usually takes more than one subject to fully understand the importance of a topic. Teaching subjects together at once can allow the students to synthesize different siutations in a more effective way.

Teaching the Teacher

One of the things that I believe in most is that people Never stop learning. However, a lot of teachers think they know almost everything becasue they teach something. I truly believe that teachers learn just as much as the students that they teach. Teachers have so much to learn as they obtain new students each year. Students are a big resource for teacher's learning. Students can teach a teacher without even knowing that they are. Teachers are always learning about their students, how their students learn best, different ways to keep their students interested in learning, and just simple things that they did not know in life becasue new generations keep occurring. Teachers are in a career to know certain topics and teach those topics, but teachers are in a career where they will never stop learning new material and information. Teachers have numerous resources available to them, which allows teachers to have an upper-hand in society.

Intelligences

Howard Gardner teaches us that there are different intelligences that characterize students and people in general. Gardner stresses that each intelligence is equally important and each person that is characterized by an intelligence does better at certain jobs in life. Most people only think about the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences, but there are so many more. Knowing each of the intelligences and knowing that students can succeed in certain ones will help me as a future teacher by enabling me to bring out each intelligence in each student, even if one struggles with certain intelligences. knowing Gardner's intelligences also allows me as a future teacher to bring out the one the each student excels in because more than likely, that student will have a career based on the intelligence that he/she excels in. Most of our dancers, builders, artists and athletes excel in bodily-kinesthetic while most of our readers and writers excel in verbal-linguistic. Today's math teachers, doctors, chemists, etc excel in logical-mathematical, and most therapists and counselors excel in intrapersonal. Many teachers and business people excel in interpersonal and most artists excel in visual-spacial. Many of our environmentalists excel in naturalistic. These intelligences do not define who students are going to become, but knowing and understanding each will help teachers understand how their students learn best.

Teaching Technology

Technology is growing everyday, and it is growing quickly. Technology is always changing, and people need to be up-to-date with technology. As I have learned through taking EDM 310, teaching technology to students is so important. Students need to be aware of all of the different types of technologies available to them as students and indiviudals. Students need to know how to be profficeint in technology in order to be a part of the fast-paced society in which we live today. Technology opens a whole new approach to learing with people being able to learn from others around the country and even world, at the touch of a keyboard. Technology offers students an advance to learning. Technology is a characteristic of today's world, and students need to understand how technology around them works and be able to apply it to their school work and everyday life. Understanding technology is one part of being a successful student, and students need teachers to help them understand and learn about technology. Teachers need to teach students when, how, and where technology is appropriate in the academic world. Teaching technology is very important for teachers today.

Importance of Education

Education is the most important part of being socialized in a society. Every culture and society has a need for an education; however not everybody gets the chance at an education. the importance for education will never end becasue people are always in need of being taught different things. Also, education will never end becasue each new generation that is born will need to be taught both new things as well as how the world before them worked/works. Education provides people with an upper-hand in life. Education provides people with knowledge that not everybody knows and/or understands. Education allows peoeple to be qualified for certain job positions. Education is the foundation for our society. The need and want for an education, no matter how advanced, will never end or stop.

Tools for Teaching

Tools for teaching are never-ending. I am an advocate for Google tools such as Google forms, documents, blogs, etc. Google services are FREE to anybody that has access to a computer. Google is one of the most known about search engines today. Also, Google allows people to share and collaborate with others through its tools available. Other teaching tools include blogs. Blogs can be made through different accounts, but one account is Google. Blogs allow students and teachers and anyone else to share work and comments. Comments can be made locally or around the world. Blogs allow a record of student's work. Blogs can also be a place for parents to go to to see what their children are doing in school. Blogs can also act as a document for all of the papers and information a teacher provides the students. Also, anyone can have access to the same blog if allowed. By allowing people to have access to one blog, a collaborative blog can take place. One such blog can be found at, http://attheteachersdesk.blogspot.com. Blogs such as these can act as a collaborative project for people of the same topic. Blogs are a very helpful teaching tool.
